Medical School Secondary Essay Sample

Prompt: Describe a significant challenge that has prepared you for the MD career path (1,000 characters)

Nothing has prepared me for being an MD quite like being a patient. Six years ago, I fell while hiking and shattered my tibia and fibula. I was airlifted to the nearest ER and wheeled into surgery to see if my leg could be rebuilt. The surgeons reset my leg and placed it in a brace for six months. After this painstaking process of reconstruction, I underwent countless exams, X-rays, and scans, then months of physical therapy. During this time, I observed what physicians and patients go through daily. I learned to appreciate what helps both parties: excellent communication, of course. However, being able to put myself back into the mindset of a patient is invaluable. I can empathize with their feelings of frustration, helplessness, triumph, and everything in between. Healing my leg was the biggest challenge I have overcome, but it gave me a wealth of life lessons I can apply to my medical career, and a true appreciation of the work of medical professionals.
