University of Winnipeg: How to Get Accepted

The University of Winnipeg’s mission:

Academic Overview

The University of Winnipeg (Commonly referred to as the UofW) is the one of the top universities in Winnipeg and is a dynamic university that offers a full range of programs. From undergraduate and graduate degrees to applied and joint programs with other colleges and universities, English language programs, and post-graduate diplomas and certificates. It is also the only Canadian university with a collegiate high school within it. The University of Winnipeg collegiate is an exceptional secondary school that prepares students for the pace demanded by studies at the post-secondary level. Students may attend the Collegiate to complete their high school diploma or upgrade their high school qualifications.

The University of Winnipeg offers several different programs at the undergraduate level, including 3-Year, 4-Year, and Honours Bachelor Degrees, applied and joint programs, and pre-professional streams. This last type of program is designed to provide students with the preparatory courses needed to fulfill the admission requirements for different professional programs like Medicine, Law, Dentistry, and Optometry. These programs are offered through one or more of the five faculties at the university.

 Each faculty offers several different programs of study that are quite interesting, and many of them are interdisciplinary. One program that we found particularly interesting is the Flexible Major program. This program allows students to essentially design their own major related to a central theme or focus with the help of a Faculty Sponsor and an Advisory Committee. These student-designed Majors usually combine courses from different university departments and can lead to either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science. 

Last but certainly not least, it is worth mentioning that the University of Winnipeg has a student-to-faculty ratio of 22:1. Not only is this one of the best ratios in the country, but the school also takes full advantage of it by keeping its class sizes small. This encourages students to interact and exchange ideas while also ensuring that the professors can give each student enough attention. This ratio also tells us that it is relatively easy for students to get support on campus. So, whether you are trying to figure out how to study in Canada as an international student, or simply adjusting to the demands of tertiary education, you will have access to your professors and other members of the faculty who can help you navigate the challenging world of university.

Admissions statistics

The UofW's acceptance rate is estimated to be 75% based on the available information, but at this time, the University does not publish its general undergraduate acceptance rate. In addition to this generous acceptance rate, the school also has a diverse student body. Over 14% of the University's total student population comes from outside Canada and represents 80 different countries. So, if you are hoping to study in Canada as an international student, your chances of admission to the University of Winnipeg are pretty good. Additionally, this school has one of the strongest Indigenous participation rates among Canadian universities. Almost 10% of the student body self-identifies as Indigenous.

Tuition and financial aid

The University of Winnipeg is one of the most accessible universities in Canada. Not only does it have one of the lowest tuition fees in the country, but it is also located in the heart of one of Canada's most affordable cities. The exact amount that a student has to pay depends on their faculty, the number of courses they are taking each term, and their lifestyle. That said, on average, domestic students can expect to spend between $4500 and $5000 per academic year in tuition fees alone, which is much cheaper than other Canadian universities.

Even though $5000 is considered low compared to other universities in the country, it is still a significant amount of money. That's why many students at the University of Winnipeg take advantage of the different programs that the school has put in place to assist students in need. The work-study program is a particularly interesting one as it is designed to give students the opportunity to earn money while gaining valuable work experience on campus. Students get to work as research assistants, assistant technicians, office assistants, and more.

Furthermore, the UofW distributes over $6 million in scholarships, awards, and bursaries every year. It also gives out roughly $20 million in annual government student aid to assist students with education costs. All applicants are automatically considered for their entrance scholarship when they apply for admission to the UofW undergraduate programs. Applicants may apply for additional support after completing the general admissions application. During that process, they will be asked a series of questions that will help the school determine how it can best help them, and the university even goes as far as to generate a list of recommended funding opportunities that the student may qualify for.

Admissions requirements & selection factors

In order to be eligible for admission to the University of Winnipeg’s undergraduate program, you need to meet the following criteria: 

• Have successfully completed High School
• Have successfully completed Grade 12 English
• Have a minimum 65% average that includes English and any other course requirements

 As with most Canadian universities, programs may have their own requirements so applicants should also verify the requirements for their chosen field of study. Some programs in the faculties of Business and Economics, Science, Education, and Kinesiology require that students complete specific high school courses before starting their studies at the UofW. The school also takes into account IB and AP courses when considering admission requirements, proof of English proficiency, scholarships, and university Credit. If there are any advanced courses offered at your high school, we recommend taking at least a few of them to strengthen your application. It’s a great way to show the admissions board that you can handle a demanding curriculum. Additionally, these courses may be eligible for transfer credit or advanced standing.

While your academic performance is the biggest selection factor for the University of Winnipeg, it's important to note that they do also look for students who embody the values in their mission statement. The UofW is committed to academic freedom, self-governance, and community service. You can show that you embody these qualities through different activities on your high school resume and by taking advanced classes if available at your high school.

The admissions process

Unlike with universities of Ontario, universities in Manitoba do not have a centralized application system like OUAC. To apply to the University of Winnipeg, you will need to fill in an application online through the student application portal of the school’s website and pay a non-refundable application fee of $100 for domestic students or $120 for international applicants. Once you've submitted your application, the school recommends that you log in frequently to track the status of your application and check for any additional document requests. Depending on your chosen program of study, you may be asked to provide one or more of the documents listed below:

If you are asked to provide a college letter of recommendation, you should make sure it is written by someone who's had the opportunity to evaluate your academic or professional performance and knows you well enough to speak about your abilities and skills using concrete examples. We recommend choosing one of your teachers, a coach, a work supervisor, or your high school counselor. It is best to avoid recommendation letters from family members and friends.

Admissions decision

 When your application is processed, and a decision has been reached, you will be notified directly through the application portal before an acceptance letter is sent out. You will either be offered a place at the University of Winnipeg, or your application may be rejected. The processing time for most applications is six to eight weeks, but the university of Winnipeg warns that it can take longer if there is any transfer credit evaluation to be done. 

 The University of Winnipeg has four application cycles in a year. Barring any complications in their applications, students who apply by the December 31^st deadline will typically hear back by the end of February. Those who apply by March 1^st will get a response by the end of May. The application cycles in the summer have a shorter processing time, so students who apply by June 10^th will get a response by the end of the same month, and students who submit an application by July 2^nd get notified by the end of July.
