Experience Type: Community Service/Volunteer – Medical/Clinical

Experience Name: Medical Genetics Clinic Volunteer

Hours: 350

Most Meaningful: No

Description:

During this yearlong internship at X Children’s Hospital, I delved into an insofar unfamiliar aspect of medicine: medical genetics. My duties included an initial workup of patients to assemble a family pedigree of the patient. Seeing the manifestation of recessive vs. dominant, familial vs. sex-dependent mutations shed light on the sheer complexity of the human body. Shadowing genetic counselors and clinical geneticists, I also learned about the multifaceted combinations of genetic mutations that lead to pathological outcomes, such as the BRCA1 familial mutation and its effect on the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
