Experience Type: Physician Shadowing/Clinical Observation

Experience Name: Medical Internship in South Sudan

Hours: 210

Most Meaningful: No

Description:

After high school, I wanted to explore global health to better understand what medicine looked like in other countries. This urged me to partake in a medical internship in a rural village in South Sudan. Assigned a physician mentor each week, I shadowed and got involved in medical procedures and policies, while learning to break down cultural and language barriers. I witnessed the impact of limited resources on the quality of patient care, such as lack of oxygen tanks or surgical gloves. My understanding of cross-cultural medical communication was further deepened by daily global health seminars by local physicians.
