Experience Description: I was hired at Acceleration Learning to teach elementary school students struggling in math, science, and English subjects. Many of the students I worked with had learning disabilities or ADHD; others simply wanted to maintain their grades or get ahead in their learning. I designed learning activities, identified areas to improve, and created individualized goals and learning plans for students. (399 characters, with spaces)
Most Meaningful Experiences Remarks: I decided to become a tutor for elementary school students because my younger brother, who is autistic and in fourth grade, relies on my help in a lot of his subjects. Though they may try, many schools don’t provide adequate support for students who “learn differently.” As someone who has first-hand experience working intimately with someone who fits into this category, I wanted to use my expertise to help others. I had one student named Penny who was struggling in English class. She wasn’t motivated to read, and she had trouble distinguishing between conflict and plot. Her issue was mainly with focus. She was, however, an incredible artist, so I decided to have her draw the characters and some of the scenes in the book. Her interest in the story she needed to write a report on instantly skyrocketed, and by the end of the week, she had a fully written report and beautiful art to go with her presentation. Working with such a diverse group begets unpredictability. I understand that. I’ve learned to identify the needs of the individual and leverage their strengths to engage them in the activity. I think it’s important to acknowledge that what works for one person might not work for another. (1,207 characters, with spaces)
