How Competitive Is Dental School? What Is Dental School Admissions Consulting? How Does Dental School Admissions Consulting Help Applicants? How Do You Find the Right Dental School Admissions Consultant? FAQs

How Competitive Is Dental School?

Over the years, the dental profession has gained popularity because it has a shorter training period than medical school, and it usually has a more favorable work-life balance. As a result, the landscape is more competitive! Dentists typically have a low unemployment rate and they are some of the highest-paid doctors in Canada and the US. The number of dental schools has risen, but so has the number of applicants.

Consequently, dental school acceptance rates are relatively low, even at the easiest dental schools to get into. In the US, there are only 70 dental schools, and the average acceptance rate is around 6.4%. In Canada, there are even fewer dental schools. There are only 10 total, offering programs in both French and English. The average acceptance rate for dental schools in Canada is only 12.1%. Dental schools are often as selective as medical schools in their admissions, the application requirements are just as rigorous at dental schools as they are at medical schools, and there are comparatively far fewer dental schools out there. This means that to get accepted into a dentistry program, students need to submit a stellar application that stands out.

What Is Dental School Admissions Consulting?

Essentially, a dental school advisor helps students navigate the lengthy, complex admissions road to dental school. This can include helping you plan your path to dental school, getting ready for the Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) and CASPer test, deciding which schools to apply to, preparing your dental school applications, and practicing for your interviews.

Some students may find they require assistance with one component of the application process, whereas others benefit from having ‘all hands on deck’ to help them practice for interviews, prepare applications, and study for their DAT and CASPer:

“I chose to hire BeMo for my CASPer prep as there seemed to be few resources available online to learn how to answer questions effectively in the time available. I really appreciate how thorough their resources are and more so, how well they are able to articulate where one's gaps are to improve. [My admissions consultant] gave me a pragmatic approach to handling future scenarios with similar underlying themes. I am really looking forward to taking what I learn each session to improve and ideally score what is needed to be competitive.” – Mike, Former BeMo Student

The dental admissions process requires time, effort, and preparation. Applicants need to ensure that every component of their application is compelling and tailored to the school that they are applying to. That’s where dental admissions consultants come in. They know this process inside and out, so they can provide guidance, tips, and strategies that will help students create the strongest application possible. Furthermore, they are more familiar with the process and timeline of applying to dental school through the Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS) dental school application or the Texas Medical and Dental School Application Service (TMDSAS).

As with medical school, the dental school admissions process can be daunting for a student to navigate alone. Our own student, Sebastian, is an aspiring dentist and spent numerous hours working with a dental school admissions consultant in preparation for his interviews:

"I knew I was very bad at talking about myself and answering those tricky questions, so I knew I had to practice extra hard for these interviews. After about eight sessions over the span of one month, I was ready when the real interview came around. I was confident, still a little nervous, but confident. When it comes to preparing for interviews, it's very difficult and you have to put in a lot of work, but it proved to be very, very helpful." – Sebastian, BeMo student, current student at the Western University’s DDS program

How Does Dental School Admissions Consulting Help Applicants?

Dental school admissions consulting is supposed to prepare you for the next important step in your journey to becoming a dentist. These advisors provide invaluable feedback on your application, from helping you find the best dental school extracurriculars to writing your dental school personal statement. Dental school admissions consulting, when done right, can make a huge difference for students at different points in their academic journey. Your admissions consultant(s) will always have your best interest in mind; their goal is to see you succeed:

“I’d like to thank a lot all The Bemo team especially Karim Wafa, Samuel Jang and Braydon Connell. They were really professional and giving customized to the point instructions to ace the interview, but what I liked most that they were trying to give me detailed strategy and structure to ace any type of questions. Thanks to their efforts, I got accepted to dental school at University of Toronto.” -  Mahmoud Aly, Former BeMo Student, current student at the University of Toronto Dental Program.

How Do You Find the Right Dental School Admissions Consultant?

To help you find and select the best consultant, we’ve put together a list of things to keep in mind as you begin your search for the person that will guide you through this critical step of your academic journey.

1. Qualifications Matter

We’ve already established that an admissions consultant can help you maximize your chances of gaining admission to dental school. Still, you need to remember that that’s only true if they are qualified to do so. We recommend that you check their website for their credentials. This includes their academic background, the services offered, and their success rate.. at BeMo, we’re proud of our consultants (and our reviews) and maintain transparency on our website, as well as TrustPilot.  Just take a look at this review from a student who received BeMo’s services for CASPer prep:

“People may say test prep companies aren’t worth it, but honestly I feel that this course was an investment for me. Helen Martin was incredibly gentle, patient, honest, and clear with me during my CASPer prep sessions. The way she structured our time together, I was detecting my own mistakes in no time. I am sure the rest of their tutors and instructors are equally as qualified and empowering. If you do choose to go with BeMo, put in the effort and you will be satisfied! Trust the process!” - A. Natt, Former BeMo Student

2. Reviews Matter

As you have seen throughout this articles, reviews from past applicants who used that service are crucialYou should check the consultant’s (or firm’s) website to see if they have any success stories and look for independent reviews on reputable websites like Trustpilot to see what other students have to say about them. This will give you a more unbiased idea of the services they offer, and it will also give y

ou a better idea of the kind of experience that they have – the more reviews, the better. Here’s just a few of our student reviews:

“I love working with Amanda! I leave each session feeling confident in myself. Her tips are great when it comes to writing my essays and help me better understand how to write them, not only to use them in the application process but also through my career in the future.” – Ruhee Momin, Former BeMo Student

“I really appreciate my reviewer for giving me amazing feedback to make my essays stronger! The feedback was amazing and thoughtful, and I truly believe my essays are the best they have been with their help.” – Anonymous BeMo Student

“I think BeMo academic consulting is absolutely fabulous, the work they do and the advice they provide is fantastic.” – Ritika Bahri, Former BeMo Student

If you are applying through AADSAS, you’ll want to know these helpful AADSAS personal statement tips:

3. Price Matters

We know that this is an investment in your future, and money is obviously an important factor. Although it may be important, students have hesitations or struggle to justify spending money on a professional service if it’s something they haven’t done in the past…

“I had a mock interview and review session with Dr. Nyasha Gondora. I could not recommend BEMO more- I had my hesitations due to the price; however, I am so so so happy with my purchase. I have been practicing with family and friends, but nothing compares to having a professional. Nyasha was so personable, attentive, and constructive.” – Natalie S, Former BeMo Student

With this in mind, you should look for a company that either has their prices available for you to see on their website or, even better, one that offers a free initial consultation during which you can discuss your needs. At BeMo, we offer a Get In or Your Money Back guarantee…this is something you should inquire about, too!

4. Philosophy Matters

When you use dental school admission consulting services, you are paying for a service, so of course, it’s a business transaction. That said, you should make sure that you’re dealing with a business that actually cares. While it’s true that YOU are the one going to dental school, it goes without saying that a good admissions consultant will actually care whether you succeed:

“Jelena Jelusic provided outstanding feedback, insightful suggestions, and helped me brainstorm effectively. Her genuine care for students is evident. I faced the admission committee confidently, and no question caught me off guard. If you're looking for an exceptional academic consultant, Dr. Jelusic is the best choice!” – Anonymous BeMo student

“BeMo academic consultants truly care about your success!” – Meg Fisher, BeMo student

“[My consultant’s] care for both my mental and physical well-being in addition to the preparation for my upcoming interview, made me feel like I truly have a team at BeMo that has supported me through this tenuous application process. Support from people like Aali makes this scary experience a lot less intimidating.” – Khan, BeMo student

For example, here at BeMo, one of the ingredients in our recipe for success is our passion for helping our students. We genuinely believe that everyone has a right to choose and study for their profession based on their intrinsic motivation instead of being limited by some of the hurdles and biases that come with admissions practices. This philosophy helps us keep our eye on the prize with each and every student.
