Prompt: What has been the one most important volunteer work you have done and why was it meaningful? (800 characters)
Translating in a health clinic to help Koreans who did not speak English was meaningful. Through this, I observed that minorities are more reserved and less engaged with healthcare resources overall. It is important to advocate for the needs of the marginalized because there are barriers for them to advocate for themselves. This, in part, explains the health disparity among these minority populations; they are not only overlooked from the preventative care standpoint, but are also hesitant to proactively address health issues themselves when they arise due to these barriers.
This is the most important lesson and passion I will bring to UCLA. I hope to spread the value of inclusion and open communication, emphasizing the importance of bridging health disparities in practice.
