In 10 years, I’d like to be working as an orthodontist. I had braces when I was younger, which was what inspired me to want to pursue dentistry in the first place, orthodontics more specifically. I think more than anything I’d like the join the Canadian Dental Association to become an advocate. Dental health, like physical health, is often overlooked by certain people, and access has been a problem in recent decades. The most pressing issue, in my view, is the need for federal investments in dental care. For instance, Newfoundland has a universal access dental program for children but not seniors; programs in other countries typically lack comprehensiveness, especially for preventative care. Barriers to access are also a concern for populations living in remote communities; more attention needs to be given to certain groups whose socioeconomic and environmental conditions contribute to lack of adequate oral care. I will use my training and understanding of these issues to address the root cause and hopefully make dentistry a more reachable service for everyone.
