Entry: Cross-country ski has been a long-time passion of mine, and I’ve been a member of my local all-ages club for nearly 10 years. Cross-country skiing has undeniable health benefits, but as it is a slower-paced sport, it leaves room for socializing, too. Cross-country skiing has had a positive impact on my physical health, mental well-being and has expanded my social relationships.

Entry: I volunteered with the Mason County Fire Department for 3 years. As a volunteer firefighter my job involved maintaining equipment and gear, and I made routine inspections to ensure everything was up to code. It was my job to assist and provide support by establishing public safety during emergencies or providing first aid on calls. I also participated in public education about fire safety. I acted as a community role model by advising and educating the public on proper fire safety and emergency response tactics.

Entry: I spent 6 months shadowing Dr. [Name], a DO practitioner of family medicine at [Town] Medical Clinic. I wanted to learn first-hand how a DO practitioner approached public health in a small community. I was able to get to know all of Dr. [Name]’s regular patients and learned how to take a patient’s history and keep a digital record in the clinic system. Dr. [Name] also walked me through how she evaluated patient’s and their histories, made a diagnosis and decided on treatment steps. She demonstrated how the patient record system worked at the clinic and how to consult records from past visits to keep diagnoses and treatment plans up to date.

Activity: Publications/Research

Publication: Journal of Osteopathic Medicine

Entry: I participated in a study with Dr. [A] and Dr. [B] on the use of osteopathic manipulative medicine for injury prevention and improved musculoskeletal health. Specifically, we examined what effect OMM could have on fall prevention and injury prevention. I was responsible for recording patient information and histories to establish a baseline. I recorded the OMM treatments prescribed and noted any weekly changes to patients’ balance, flexibility and strength. Working alongside Drs. [A] and [B] gave me a better understanding of OMM treatments and what short-term effects they can have for patients.
