Medical school applications for the state of Texas largely differ from those in the remaining states of the United States. The reason why medical schools in the state of Texas are different from those in the rest of the United States, with the exception of the Baylor College of Medicine, is that the primary application service is called the Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service, or TMDSAS. All medical schools in Texas use this service for the processing of applications with the exception of Baylor College of Medicine.

Which medical schools in Texas accept out-of-state/Canadian/International applicants?

In terms of universities in the state of Texas accepting out-of-state, Canadian, or International applicants, it is important to note that, according to the 2014 Texas General Appropriations Act, Section 13, no more than 10% of each admitted class may be comprised of Non-Texas residents. This is something you should be aware of before applying if you are an out-of-state, Canadian, or International applicant.

Information about the Application Process for Medical Schools in Texas - TMDSAS

1. Pay attention to TMDSAS Matching System

Each school ranks you in comparison to all other applicants. By January 15th, each school that uses the system submits a rank-ordered list of applicants from Texas to the TMDSAS. The TMDSAS then uses that information from schools to match with the applicant’s preference. Letter of acceptance from all schools participating in the match as sent on February 1st to fill any remaining positions in the class. To check you match status, go to the TMDSAS website. From there, applicants are required to indicate their decision in writing within 2 weeks time.

January 20th is an important deadline for you!

  • Deadline for applicants to submit their match preference rank list for schools at which they interviewed
  • Deadline for medical schools to submit their rank lists for the TMDSAS Match

Always pay attention to the Medical School Application Timeline - follow that link for more information!

2. Submit your Applications Early

Some schools will begin to review applications for the entire duration of the interview season. So, this means that you want to submit your applications as early as possible because as time goes by, the number of available spots becomes less and less. Application processing can take several weeks before it arrives in the respective admissions offices from TMDSAS. The sooner your application is in the admissions office, the sooner you can possibly be invited for an interview.

The TMDSAS application opens on May 2nd and the earliest date to file your TMDSAS application is on May 3rd. So, be ready! Submit as early as possible

Rolling admissions begins after Feb. 1st until all spots are filled.

3. National Reply Date

Accepted M.D. candidates must choose a single medical school to attend by April 30th. So, you must have made up your mind as to where you want to study medicine before April 30th. If you have multiple acceptances, you need to put a lot of thought and consideration into where you want to study. As yourself questions such as, but not limited to:

  • What program is best suited to my learning needs?
  • What environment best suits my lifestyle?
  • What school will best prepare me and position me to have the top choices for residency?
  • What is unique about each school and how will that school help me achieve my overall goals?
